What is Bowen?

The Bowen Technique, explained

A gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that invites the body to relax, rebalance and respond in its own time — for people, horses and dogs.

The technique

A soft-tissue conversation with the body

Using light, rolling moves over muscle and fascia — with deliberate pauses in between — Bowen invites the body to relax, rebalance and respond in its own time. There's no forceful manipulation; the therapist begins by gently stimulating the nervous system, then pauses to give the body time to respond.

It's suitable for people of all ages — adapted forms work beautifully with everyone from newborns to the elderly. Horses and dogs respond amazingly too, with no perception of what to expect.

1
The move

A gentle, rolling motion over a precise point on muscle, tendon or fascia.

2
The pause

Deliberate stillness — sometimes the therapist leaves the body for a moment — letting the nervous system respond.

3
The whole body

Bowen works with the whole body's own regulation, rather than chasing a single symptom. Every body is different, and the therapist works with this — reading the body as the treatment unfolds.

Benefits & what to expect

A calm, fully-clothed session

You stay fully clothed on a treatment couch. Gentle moves and quiet pauses follow — many people feel deeply relaxed. Your therapist will explain a typical session, how many you might need, and set honest expectations.

Gentle & non-invasive

Light moves, no forceful manipulation — suitable for all ages.

Works with the body

Supports the body's own regulation rather than forcing change.

Calm & restful

Many people feel deeply relaxed during and after a session.

Bowen is a supportive, complementary therapy. We describe it as gentle and supportive — never as a medical cure — and always encourage you to keep your healthcare team informed.

The same gentle principles, adapted

For horses and dogs, the same gentle approach supports comfort, movement and recovery — always with calm handling and the appropriate veterinary consent required by UK law.
